The Miracle

It was a total blacked out, the doctors panicked as the patient was out of oxygen.  The patient was surrounded by doctors, when the patient woke up, somebody asked to move her fingers, then her feet, the patient responded. The patient was expected by the doctors to be in coma, or worst  she couldn’t survive.

For days, she was fed through her nose and has oxygen to breathe through her mouth and throat, she communicated through terrible hand writing trying to be understood. There was a time when she couldn’t be understood, thinking of losing hope, but her faith kept her strong to fight the battle to survive.

They concluded it to be a miracle.  The patient fought several battles and yet she survived,  she is writing this blog right now and that patient was me.

“Life is temporary and volatile” as they say.  Today you can be very strong, but tomorrow can be your weakest or even your last day.   So better enjoy and be happy always.  If today you are alone and hopeless, tomorrow you can be surrounded by great people you couldn’t even imagine, like angels on earth who will support and protect you.

Sometimes you have to fight certain battles to realize what you should be worth fighting for.   Sometimes you have to travel alone and step out of your comfort zone to experience God’s wonders in everyday life.  Miracles do happen, you won’t believe until it happened to you.

The Easter

Every Easter Sunday is the reunion of my mother’s big clan, as she has 11 siblings, 2 of her siblings have 12 children, that makes us more than first cousins. Our ancestors have passed on the statue of a resurrected Christ made of ivory from generation to generation. Each family has the responsibility to contribute for the flowers, catering, helpers and other incidental expenses.

The clan has been blessed with the  inheritance of  lands and fish ponds.  Our grandparents are called by their Spanish names  Don and Dona or the haciendero and haciendera. They have left a legacy that the future generation will cherish.  With huge land, comes with huge responsibility to nurture and continue the legacy.  However,  it has been the cause of division  to some and unity to many.

It’s only when you travel outside the country that you’ll realize how fortunate it is to live in the Philippines with helpers to do the chores for you and assist you, a home service masseuse, fertile lands, abundance of water and resources waiting to be discovered and developed.   The wrong notion of being too confident of having inheritance has developed the idea of being complacent.  Until such time they realized they run out of resources.  However, it takes for an entrepreneurial spirit to have the confidence to take the risk and make the ideas or vision to reality.  Moreover, it still takes knowledge, skills, and experience for a project to be successful.

Being brought up in a very close family, coming from a big clan, having more than 50 first cousins, who are scattered in different countries and have an annual reunion during the Easter Sunday, has its pros and cons, it helps you get used to a big crowd and can relate to different types of people.  However, conflict is inevitable because of hearsays and minconstrued statements passed on from one person to the other.

There were times during the reunion, the day that should be peaceful and solemn has been tainted with grudges because of envy and greed by criticizing and gossiping other people.  I felt the exhaustion  of my relatives defending themselves from the hearsays eversince.  Gathering together with relatives in front of the resurrected Christ but gossiping on the side.  Talking like Gods as they make fond of other people by backstabbing them.  Exodus 20:16.

Reunion is not an election to influence the majority, nor a competition to fight against the other. Reunion should be a venue to talk about ideas that will be productive, beneficial and helpful to everyone concern.  A chance to talk about peace, unity and solidarity to continue the legacy that the ancestors have left.

I hope that this Sunday it’ll be solemnly beautiful and that this holy week be truly meaningful to all.

The Virgin Bitch

Meet Cookie girl, a 14 year old, playful,  dominating, happy and a virgin bitch.

Today I’ve witnessed another miracle, a successful operation of a 14 year old (80+ human age) poodle named Cookie girl.

Last April 2015, there were hesitations for the operation because of her  heart condition.  The doctor said that there’s a little time left for her to live.

This year, a positive opinion was taken to action from a doctor,  a chance for her to live again and a chance for her to survive the operation.

To our surprise, she survived the operation and still alive. Though still hopeful for her fast recovery, but it’s another miracle to be thankful for.

Cookie girl taught us that everyday is a great day and happiness can change the circumstances.   Your health can also depend on your emotions.  Since she is a happy dog, her optimism could have contributed to her survival.  Even with pain, she still tries to give joy and hope that life is something to fight for.

There might be people who will make you feel hopeless, who will make you inferior or even try to destroy you, but life is to short to dwell on the negativity of people and circumstances.  It’s a waste of time to let the negativity distract you.

Life has full of surprises.   God is truly amazing.  Faith and prayers can do wonders. Sometimes a hopeless case can miraculously change.  So every second is valuable and should be enjoyable because life is too short and fragile.  As Cookie girl would say it, “Everyday is a great day that you deserve a treat”.

The Betise of Generalizing the Muslims

Being brought up in a conservative Catholic community and a country dominated by Christians, my ignorance about the Islam religion made me defensive especially after the 9/11 attack by the terrorist group named the Al-Qaeda in New York.

Working in Egypt had given me the chance to work and interact with Muslims. As I worked my way in the society and culture, my perception about Muslims has changed. I became open minded and felt guilty about my misconception about them. They have shown to be kind, loving and respectful people that made my stay memorable and rewarding. As an expat, I felt at home. One of them that I’ll never forget and has set a good example was Ms. Nihal, whom I call my angel, because I have never seen someone so beautiful inside and out. A person full of positivity in life, a kind, loving, caring, humble, and cheerful person. Her smile and optimism are contagious. She’s like an angel on earth. How good life could be if people are like her, an environment full of positive energy.

Just like Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism, Islam is a religion that teaches peace, love and humility. Religion guides people to be united and live peacefully. It is the ignorance, selfishness and greed that divide people which lead to conflict, terrorism and even war.

I am a Catholic but I have respect for our Muslim brothers and sisters. In the end, we are all equal and it’s no longer about religion, but how you treat the uniqueness and individuality of each person.

With the upcoming US election, a leading presidential candidate has chosen to involve the Muslims. Maybe his ignorance has resulted in his generalization of the Muslims as evident on his impulsive statements. To “ban all Muslims to travel the US” is disturbing. This kind of statement does not help in solving the threat of terror to humanity, but could embolden extremists and a reason to justify their actions. An educated, well informed individual, more so, a presidential candidate and a would be top diplomat should not stir an already volatile situation.

If you want peace in the country, then speak about peace and unity, as it will lead to peace and unity. Aggression is not a solution, it leads to destruction. America needs a diplomatic leader, not an impulsive, tactless and careless leader. His advisers should find out what values and norms do they share with the Muslims and try to solve the conflict diplomatically. The Muslim community deserves his apology. Regardless of your religion, we are all humans, and just like all of us, they deserve to be loved and respected, and deserve to live a peaceful and honorable life.

The New Philippines

To our new President Duterte and Vice President Leni  congratulations!  May you be guided by God to do what is best for our country.  May your term change the lives of our countrymen for the betterment of the nation.

Eradicate Monopoly, Bureaucracy and Poverty.

Promote Democracy, Diplomacy, Peace and Order of the Country.

May your authority be used to:

  1. Form strong alliance with other nations.
  2. Diplomatically solve problems.
  3. Raise funds from the elite thru different programs, events and activities to benefit the underserved communities.
  4. Conduct training to educate the youth and provide deployment that will be beneficial for themselves and their families.
  5. Develop policies that will lead to order and peace of the country.

I hope that you would take into consideration the following:

  1. Trade Agreement with the US, Canada, Europe, Africa, Australia and with other Asian Countries.
    • “For a more stable and transparent trading and investment environment”.
    • “For easier and cheaper exporting and importing of goods”.
    • “For citizens to enjoy trade surplus of manufactured goods”.
  1. Better Healthcare System
      • Tax free for pharmaceutical products will help reduce the cost of pharmaceutical products to make it affordable to everyone.
      • Free medical and healthcare to senior citizens and reach out to underserved communities.
      • Davao’s emergency response like 911 is exemplary which I am optimistic that it can be done nationwide.
      • To monitor all the poultry and agricultural products in the market and make sure that they are safe for consumption. The Department of Agriculture and The Department of Trade and Industry can work together to make sure that all the food in the markets are safe. An annual surprise visit shall be done in the markets and if there are food that are unsafe, the company should no longer operate and should pay corresponding penalty fee for non-compliance.
      • Provide product certification and comply with the standards to assure the quality of food.
  1. Better Education System
    • To improve the school facilities by making it self sustainable, thru:
        • Maximizing the space and cultivate the soil, which means, using the space for commercial use to generate income and cultivate the soil thru gardening or planting fruits and vegetables for profit and sustainable ecosystem.
        • Improve the buildings and security to attract investors for weekend paid events.
    • To partner with companies for their marketing purposes, but will help develop the libraries and classrooms in return or supply personal hygienic products to the students or provide free meal to students.
    • To develop and implement a policy that will require the government officials to send their children to public school.  This will enforce the improvement of the facility and quality of education of the public schools to compete in a globalized world.  As well as to invite more international students to study in public schools to promote tourism.
  1. Advocate on Climate Change
      • Educate everyone about climate change.
      • Strictly enforce proper segregation disposal like:
        • Schedule of Pickup: Monday & Friday – biodegradable products, Wednesday – Recycled Products (separate containers for bottles, papers, cans & plastics), Thursday – electrical, gadgets, and hazardous waste. The most organized family will get monthly prizes like (Example: free movie tickets – the government can collaborate with the entertainment industry for sponsorship with regards to this program)
      • Strictly enforce “No Littering in Public” policy – with corresponding penalty fee or community service for non-compliance.
      • Strictly enforce SMOG Check – with penalty fee for smoke belching.
      • Strictly enforce “Drainage Compliance” policy. To make sure all buildings and houses comply with proper drainage system to prevent flood – with corresponding penalty fee for non-compliance.
  1. Promote Peace and Order
      • Strictly enforce “No Drink & Drive” policy.  Driving under the influence of alcohol should be strictly prohibited that will suspend the driver’s license for certain number of months.
      • Improve the transportation system to improve the traffic and security on the road.
      • Centralized First Aid Stations and Police stations in all crowded areas. This can be funded or sponsored by business establishments within the vicinity which can help sustain the cost.
      • Proper Monitoring System by installing clear security cameras in public areas. This can be funded or sponsored by business establishments within the area which can help sustain the cost.
      • Strictly enforce “Drug Free” environment” – with corresponding penalty fee or community service for non-compliance.
        • Accurate and Efficient Annual Drug Test to all drivers, students, employees and business owners – included in annual medical check-up.
        • Dog sniffers in all airports, hotels, check points and toll gates.
      • Community service for policy breakers will be:
        • Minimum Offense: Farming and gardening in government owned lands to develop the government owned properties for profit and sustainability.
        • Major Offense: Cleaning the public comfort rooms, public offices, public schools.

When I studied Public Administration in a public university, I realized that there are a lot to learn and how  essential it is for all government officials to take the course.  I hope that all government officials, including the employees will be required to take Public Administration and Law or a comprehensive certificate program that will provide literacy to everyone involved in community service.

I was once a community  leader, and being a community leader is being a community servant.  It taught me how to to provide quality service without expecting anything in return.  There’s no monetary reward but the experience of making a difference in your own simple way is priceless.

I’ve witnessed that the less fortunate citizens in the underserved communities have the potential to improve their lives. It is thru the right policies, right education and guidance that can change them.

I know that it takes a firm and strong leader to implement the policies and programs. But with proper communication, collaboration and diplomacy, any policies, programs and political platforms can be implemented smoothly.

With the right policies in place and proper implementation, plus faith in our almighty father in heaven.   I can vividly see the NEW Philippines, that our motherland will be  back to her economic power, and most of all, contribute to our mother earth’s sustainable ecosystem.

Mayweather deserves an apology, he deserves his victory.

I admire Pacquiao, how he helped his family from rags to riches. I even wanted him to win, until I read how Mayweather was criticized, judged, hated and even cursed by the viewers and Pacquiao’s fans.

Some misconceptions about the so called Fight of the Century were as follows:

1. Boxing was expected to be a bloody combat and not a sport.
What happened to sportsmanship? Why do viewers have to boo at Mayweather? Why can’t Pacquiao’s fans accept being defeated by Mayweather? Both worked hard and even have strategized well enough to win. But only one should be declared as the winner. What’s wrong with Mayweather’s defensive tactic? Aren’t we supposed to realize that being defensive is necessary to survive and even win? Shouldn’t we just be thankful that the boxers weren’t severely injured?

2. The fight was seen as a war against US and the Philippines.
Mayweather was seen as the American fighter while Pacquiao as the Philippine hero. Nationalism has nothing to do with it. No one has the right to criticize others on patriotism especially in the world of globalization. Sad to know how some talk about patriotism, while eating in McDo, drinking Coca Cola, using Apple or Microsoft, driving Toyota, wearing Prada and dreaming of living in America.

3. Pacquiao was declared as the good, while Mayweather as the evil.
The religious extremists condemned Mayweather as evil while Pacquiao as the good one. Why do they have to find faults even dig to Mayweather’s past just to put him down? Are you a flawless saint to judge?

Mayweather was judged as materialist.  Who are you to criticize him of being materialist when you even prefer signature clothes, updated gadgets, branded things, can’t live without a car or comfortable house?

At the end of the day, Mayweather will enjoy his wealth happily with his team, his family and loved ones, while Pacquiao’s obsessed fans will have grudges, hatred in their hearts and might even think of wicked ways to destroy Mayweather or others.

Hope these verses will somehow be enlightening.

JUDAISM
“Don’t judge your fellow human being until you have reached that person’s place.” Pirkei Avot 2:4.
“Do not favor the poor or show deference to the rich; judge your neighbor fairly…You shall not hate your kinsman in your heart. Reprove your neighbor, but incur no guilt against your kinsfolk. Love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.” 19:16-17

CHRISTIANITY
“Do not speak against one another, brethren He who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks against the law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge of it. There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is able to save and to destroy; but who are you who judge your neighbor?” James 4:11-12
“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.” Matthew 7:1-5

“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” Ephesians 4:29

ISLAM
Allah says: “O you who believe! If a wicked person comes to you with any news, ascertain the truth, lest you harm people unwittingly, and afterwards become full of repentance for what you have done.” Surah al-Hujurat: 5

BUDDHISM
“If we find fault with others, we ourselves are also in the wrong. When other people are in the wrong, we should ignore it, for it is wrong for us to find fault. By getting rid of this habit of fault-finding, we cut off a source of defilement. When neither hatred nor love disturb our mind, serenely we sleep.” Sutra of Hui Neng 2

HINDUISM
“Why should you try to mend, the failings of the world, sirs? Correct your bodies first, each one of you! Correct your minds first, each one! Lord Shiva does not approve of
those who shed crocodile tears to their neighbor’s grief.” Basavanna, Vachana 24

For this, Mayweather deserves an apology, he deserves his victory. May love and peace reign over hatred, war and wickedness.  Let’s just all be happy.

Yuletide 2012 in the Philippines

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Photos taken December 2012 in the Philippines.

Yuletide is a term used as a 12 day festival, or a period from December 24 to January 6.

It has been seen in a traditional manner since it originated in Northern Europe which was then absorbed by the Christians to celebrate Christ’s birth, in which, for years, it has been correlated with White Christmas.

I want the people from the northern part of the world to see that the Yuletide Season or Christmas Season is not just White Christmas, thus:

  • It has a variety of colors like the parrots;
  • It is tropical like the landscape;
  • It is filled with big dreams of having a Rolls-Royce;
  • It has Rolls-Royce and could be colorful but in solitude;
  • It has the sparkling Christmas tree;
  • It has angels everywhere and they are in gold;
  • It has the Trading Post but only open for business;
  • It brings out ingenuity like the colorful bottled lanterns;
  • It has wine that energizes the spirit;
  • It has cookies to satisfy the senses and desires;
  • But more than anything else, there is the light, that enlightens us to appreciate its significance, especially in the dark night.

It would be great to know the symbols that represent Yuletide in other countries and cultures.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND HAVE A BLESSED YEAR AHEAD!
