Bahariya Oasis

Bahariya is considered having the most beautiful deserts in the whole world.  However, no wonder why most of the Egyptians whom I asked haven’t been to Bahariya because it’s almost a 10 hour travel by land from Cairo.

We went to the organizer of the camp and had soup, salad, beans and Egyptian bread for brunch.  We also tried the authentic sushi brought by our Korean friends.  Then we went to the black desert, with mountains formed by black stones  and rocks.

It took almost an hour to reach the amazing rock formation which seemed to be an ancient ocean, with huge beige, grey and white rocks.   Our tour guides and drivers prepared Egyptian bread, tuna and vegetable salad for our lunch.

After more than an hour of travel, we’ve reached the incredible white desert where there were a lot of white rocks formed in different shapes.  The cold weather made us feel like we’re in Antarctica and the white rocks are snow.  It’s like you’re on the moon or on another planet because of the white rocks that formed like craters.

I had an overnight camping with my sister and friends in the white desert.  In the evening, our tour guides prepared chicken for dinner.  The big tent served as our dining area and the small tents were our sleeping area.  After dinner we had our campfire marshmallows and observed the tamed fox while eating our leftover food.  Our tour guides knew what we need, like enough supply of water.

It’s like we were back in the primitive age where toilet could be anywhere in the desert.  During our camping I used these 4 tips to pee in the desert:

  1. Since there were also campers nearby, they might have telescope, so look for  a good rock formation where it could hide you whenever you pee.
  2. Check the area to make sure there is no insect, animal, deposit or mark around.
  3. Use a shovel, spoon or stick to create a hole.
  4. Use tissue and not wet wipes or non-biodegradable products.

It was really uncomfortable to sleep in a tent having paranoia of insects, scorpions, wild foxes, bandits, etc.   However, my stress from the whole day travel made me sleep well.

The following day, we went to the crystal desert, mountains formed by crystals and other minerals.  Though there were laws showing that getting minerals are prohibited.  However, there were areas where it seemed to be excavated already.

I hope that the government will be strict enough to protect the tourist sites and the protected areas because I want the future generation to discover and be amazed of the wonderful creations of our creator.
